Atlanta Hawks MOSAIC Symposium Highlights
The Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club hosted the 3rd Annual MOSAIC (Model Of Shaping Atlanta through Inclusive Conversations) Symposium to a capacity filled crowd at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot. Jemele Hill, Chief Correspondent and Senior Columnist at ESPN’s The Undefeated, was the keynote speaker this year. Hill captivated the crowd as she shared her thoughts on professional athletes as social advocates, recounted her Twitter war with President Trump and challenged the audience to ask themselves, “What will you do when the moment captures you?”
“I never intended for any of this to happen. I never intended to be a disrupter. I never intended to be thrusted into a role of activisim….I did not choose the moment. The moment chose me,” said Hill.
Hill, who formerly co-hosted ESPN’s nightly SC6 program, recently joined the network’s microsite focused on sports, race and culture. The outspoken journalist notably made headlines for her Twitter comments around racially-charged issues including the NFL owner reactions to player protests, riots in Charlottesville, Va., and President Donald Trump’s unwillingness to publicly denounce racism. Hill’s comments led to death threats against her, hate mail and a White House spokesperson encouraging ESPN to fire her.
The invitation-only event, which included more than 200 of Atlanta’s leadership community also featured:
Gabrielle Claiborne, a transgender business owner and co-founder of Transformation Journeys Worldwide
Dr. Steve L. Robbins, founder and owner of S.L. Robbins and Associates, a human behavior based consulting firm
Symone Sanders, a strategist and CNN commentator who served as the national press secretary for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign
In addition to the aforementioned speakers, Bank of America’s Atlanta Market President Wendy Stewart and Atlanta-based grassroots organization Fearless Dialogues were honored with the inaugural True Comes in All Colors Awards for their work in diversity and inclusion.
